Subject Details
Module 1: Introduction
Principles of power system protection, protection zones, attributes of protection. Transducers: current transformers, potential transformers.
Module 2: Over-current Protection
Over-current relays, IDMT relays, directional over-current protection. Distance protection: impedance relay, reactance relay, mho relay.
Module 3: Differential Protection
Principles of differential protection, generator protection, transformer protection, bus-bar protection.
Module 4: Circuit Breakers
Physics of arcing, arc interruption theories. Types of circuit breakers: Air blast, Vacuum, SF6, Oil circuit breakers.
Module 5: Digital Protection
Introduction to numerical relays, block diagram of a numerical relay, sampling theorem, anti-aliasing filter.
Module 6: System Protection
Protection against lightning over-voltages, insulation coordination, grounding practices.
Module 1: Introduction to Electric Drives
Components of electric drives, factors affecting selection of drives, dynamics of motor load combination.
Module 2: DC Motor Drives
Controlled rectifier fed DC drives, chopper fed DC drives, closed loop control of DC motor drives.
Module 3: Induction Motor Drives
Stator voltage control, variable frequency control, V/f control, slip power recovery schemes.
Module 4: Synchronous Motor Drives
Cylindrical rotor and salient pole synchronous motor drives, self-controlled synchronous motor drives.
Module 5: Special Motor Drives
Brushless DC motor drives, stepper motor drives, switched reluctance motor drives.

Module 4: Industrial Applications of Illumination
Design of indoor and outdoor lighting schemes, flood lighting, street lighting.
Module 5: Electric Traction
Introduction, systems of traction, speed-time curve, mechanics of train movement: tractive effort, power, energy consumption.
Module 6: Traction Motors & Control
Desirable characteristics, motors used in traction: DC series motor, AC motors. Control of traction motors, braking: regenerative, rheostatic, plugging.
