Subject Details
Introduction
Roles of stakeholders in civil engineering; Professional ethics; Contracts management; Dispute resolution mechanisms; Labor laws; Intellectual property rights.
Module 1: Sewage & Sewerage Systems
Generation of sewage, estimation of quantity, types of sewerage systems, hydraulics of sewers, design of sewers, sewer appurtenances.
Module 2: Sewage Characteristics & Disposal
Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of sewage, BOD, COD, sewage disposal into water bodies and on land, oxygen sag curve, self-purification of streams.
Module 3: Sewage Treatment
Primary treatment: screening, grit removal, sedimentation. Secondary treatment: trickling filters, activated sludge process, oxidation ponds, septic tanks.
Module 4: Sludge Treatment & Disposal
Characteristics of sludge, sludge digestion, sludge drying beds, ultimate disposal of sludge.
Module 5: Solid Waste Management
Sources and composition of municipal solid waste, collection and transport, processing and recovery, disposal: composting, incineration, sanitary landfilling.
Module 6: Air & Noise Pollution
Sources and effects of air pollution, meteorological aspects, control of air pollution. Sources and effects of noise pollution, control measures.
Module 1: Railway Engineering
Component parts of railway track, rails, sleepers, ballast, fixtures and fastenings. Geometric design of railway track: gradient, speed, super-elevation, cant deficiency, curves.
Module 2: Points & Crossings
Turnouts, components of a turnout, design of points and crossings. Track junctions and stations.
Module 3: Airport Engineering
Aircraft characteristics, airport planning, site selection, runway orientation, wind rose diagram, runway length and its corrections.
Module 4: Airport Layout & Pavements
Taxiway design, exit taxiways, aprons, hangers, terminal area. Introduction to airport pavements.
Module 5: Docks & Harbor Engineering
Classification of harbors, site selection, tides, winds and waves, breakwaters, jetties, wharves, piers, docks, dry docks.
Module 6: Tunnel Engineering
Tunneling methods in soft ground and hard rock, tunnel lining, drainage and ventilation in tunnels.
Analysis and Design of Foundations
Types of foundations; Bearing capacity and settlement of foundations; Ground movements due to construction; Analysis and design of excavations; Retaining walls, cuts & excavations and sheet piles; Slopes and underground structures.
